Step Inside Our Dream Office

Introducing the new Spell & The Gypsy Collective HQ in Byron

When an Instagram teaser image of an office makes you want to move in there and then, you know you have to see more. Never mind it being an office, the new Spell & Gypsy HQ would make the perfect home where all your minimal chic x island living dreams come true. Sisters Isabella & Elizabeth have fused their signature style into this soaring Byron space, and it’s definitely one for the inspiration boards! Filled with natural light, eclectic furnishings, greenery and objects collected on their travels, we spoke to the talented duo about creating the perfect work environment…

Your new office space is stunning – what was the main inspiration behind the design and interior styling?
We looked to our travels for inspiration, we wanted the space to feel otherworldly and exotic because that’s environment that we design in best. But we also used the building’s original structure as inspiration, it used to be a wood carving factory and all the reclaimed wooden beams must have been erected when it was built – they’re stunning and beautifully offset the clean white open spaces with this earthy, rustic feel.

Byron is home to so many beautiful homewares and lifestyle boutiques, and Spell are also always travelling to unique destinations – did you source most of the décor locally or on your travels?
Styling our offices we looked to our local Byron creatives first and foremost to help us customise pieces. We are lucky enough in our Byron community to be surrounded by master craftsmen who support us in sourcing local materials helping maintain and continue the local history and economy. We also sourced some gorgeous pieces from Bali and Morocco with the help of local interiors store Blush & Ochre. The overall effect is that the space is an ode to the beauty of local and exotic finds – which so perfectly marries with the heart of our brand.

What is your favourite space or feature in the new office?
I love my new office – given that we outgrew our office years ago, it’s been a long time since I’ve even had a desk! I never really had a desk! I also love our boardroom. The huge, hardwood boardroom table was created for us years ago by local furniture maker Hendrix & Harlow (it takes like 12 people to lift it!!) and it’s offset with beautifully feminine pale oak and blush leather boardroom chairs, it’s the perfect masculine and feminine juxtaposition.

You have flawlessly translated the Spell aesthetic from fashion to interiors… What are your top tips for those wanting to decorate their own home or office space?
We love a balanced mix of old and new, or rustic and polished. We love clean, white open spaces but then we love accenting it with big, chunky reclaimed wood that looks a thousand years old. Ultimately an office space needs to be conducive to creativity and focus, so the cleaner and brighter the better. We achieved this with a white resin floor that helps reflect light, lots of wide open spaces, but also little breakout spaces and nooks that you can get away to if you want to have a private meeting or brainstorm. We also use a lot of homewares to give the space a soft, feminine and restorative feeling. We used soft rugs, plants and the occasional lantern or vase to give the space a lived in feeling.

The new Spell campaign was shot in Lisbon – what were a few of your highlights from shooting in Portugal?
Our team went there and we were watching from afar – but I know the highlight was shooting with our long-time muse, Bambi Northwood-Blyth as we have been waiting years to work with her again, Portuguese tarts and the gorgeous island of Madeira had these ocean pools that we shot at, the swim there was insane and the epitome of Euro summer!
