How To Survive NYFW

Tips for fashion-ing in the city that never sleeps

by | Nov 5, 2017 | Style

There’s no denying that New York is a fast-paced city, and when it comes to fashion week, it’s 24/7 non stop shows, emails, parties, appointment and events – but it’s not all fun and games! During my most recent trip, it was all about balancing deadlines and emails from back home, with my schedule on the ground in New York. Thanks to my Michel Kors Sofie watch, I was able to get on top of my week in style. A watch face that displays multiple time zones at once? Yes please!

Here are a few of my tips for surviving the week, created in collaboration with Michael Kors:

With shows spread all over Manhattan, I like to have a reliable coffee destination in each neighbourhood. Chances are I’ll need at least two lattes to make it through a day, and a croissant doesn’t go astray either… My favourites are Intelligentsia at The High Line Hotel, Jack’s Stir BrewHappy BonesTwo HandsLa Colombe and Ruby’s. Star them in your Google maps so your nearest caffeine fix is never too far away.

I like to try and fit in a bit of sightseeing when I’m travelling, and one of my favourite New York destinations is The Whitney. But it’s easy to lose track of time in the amazing contemporary art collection – that’s why I love setting reminders in my smart watch using the Google Assistant functionality. All you have to do is say ‘Ok Google’, speak your command, and your watch will take care of the rest. Definitely, a safe bet to avoid sleeping in and missing a show (yep, you can set alarms too), or an important appointment.

You can also call an Uber from the watch, without even having to reach for your phone

NYC is notorious for its traffic, and you don’t want it to cost you time you don’t have! I’ve had to run a block or two in heels before, but it pays to be organised. Make sure you have Uber (Pool is great for when time is on your side, otherwise it’s X all the way), invest in an unlimited MetroCard (because sometimes taking the subway is definitely the quickest option), and don’t be afraid to hail a cab (just remember to tip!). Bonus fact – you can also call an Uber from the watch, without even having to reach for your phone.

I always make sure I have bandaids, paracetamol, paw paw ointment, my keys, and if I have room, baby wipes. The latter will come in particularly handy when you decide you simply must have an almond butter and honey bagel before the next show (speaking from experience here again…)

There are definitely some outfits that will only work with a heel, but wherever possible, I’m all about flats, sneakers and boots for comfort when running between appointments. Luckily white sneakers look good with just about anything, and when I want to elevate an outfit without a stiletto, I love these Michael Kors boots (the stacked heel means they’re still a breeze to walk in).
